What is Kangen Water?

Kangen Water is the name given to ionized water produced by Enagic's water ionizer machines. Here's what ionization actually is, what the pH settings mean, and how households use each one.

How ionization works

Filtration, then electrolysis

First, your tap water passes through a filter that reduces chlorine taste and odor along with sediment. Then the water flows across a set of electrode plates, where a small electrical current separates it into two streams: one more alkaline, one more acidic. That process is called electrolysis.

You choose which stream comes out of the main spout by selecting a setting on the machine. Nothing is added to your water to change the flavor — the mineral content already present in your tap water is what the machine works with, which is why a demo on your own water is genuinely useful.

A quick note on pH

pH is simply a 0–14 scale describing how acidic or alkaline a liquid is. 7 is neutral; lower is more acidic, higher is more alkaline. Coffee, citrus, and soda sit on the acidic side; baking soda solutions sit on the alkaline side. Ionizers let you dial in water at several points along that scale.

The pH settings, one by one

Available settings vary by model. Here's the general range across the lineup.

Water typeApprox. pHCommon household use
Strong acidic waterpH 2.5Household cleaning tasks and rinsing surfaces in the kitchen.
Beauty waterpH 4.0 – 6.0A gentle, slightly acidic water many people use for skin, hair, and delicate plants.
Clean waterpH 7.0Filtered, neutral water — handy for taking supplements or preparing baby formula.
Alkaline drinking waterpH 8.5 – 9.5The everyday hydration setting, and the one most people notice for taste.
Strong alkaline waterpH 11.0Soaking produce, lifting oily residue, and general kitchen prep.

Everyday use cases

Drinking & hydration

Smooth-tasting alkaline water straight from the tap on your counter. Most households simply find they drink more water — and buy far fewer plastic bottles.

Cooking

Use alkaline water for soups, rice, coffee, and tea, and strong alkaline water to soak vegetables before you cook.

Cleaning

Strong acidic and strong alkaline settings replace several bottles under the sink for everyday wipe-downs and produce washing.

Beauty routine

Beauty water is a popular final rinse for face and hair, and a simple addition to a daily skincare routine.

Everything on this page describes hydration, cooking, and cleaning uses only. Ionized water is not a medical product and nothing here is intended as health advice — if you have questions about your own situation, talk with your healthcare professional.
